If you have a laptop with HDMI port, you would probably want to channel the audio output from the TV which has a much better surround sound audio output . Unfortunately, this setting is not available out of the box for Ubuntu. You will have to install a special addon for the kernel to enable that capability. Here are the steps
- Download the deb file for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from this link here and install it via cli or software centre:
sudo dpkg -i oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms_0.20140829~ubuntu14.04.1_all.deb
- For older packages go to page: https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audio-dev/+archive/ubuntu/alsa-daily/+packages
- Then force reload alsa using the following command :
sudo alsa force-reload
- After that, select HDMI from the sound menu as shown below (for me this
option appeared only after installing the above mentioned package)
- Important : Once finished, before disconnecting the HDMI cable, make sure to change the output back to speakers as Google Chrome seems to lose sound output if you don’t
