Out of the box support for PPTP VPN in Ubuntu 10.04

The list of new functionalities being introduced in Ubuntu 10.04 is becoming longer by the day. Lucid Lynx now comes with PPTP vpn support by default. This very good news for users who connect to the internet or connect to their office networks using a PPTP VPN . It becomes very easy for non-technical users who shy away from any installation . All the previous issues while connecting with pptp vpn has been resolved and now the connection is just a cakewalk.

1. Left click on the network manager and select vpn-> configure vpn .

2. Add the credentials of your network.

3. Click on advanced settings, select point-to-point encryption (MPPE) and ‘Allow stateful encryption’.

4. Uncheck the rest of the options and save the settings.

That’s it . You are ready to connect to your vpn.

UPDATE: A very important point made by one of our readers(Toby) about using local connection for browsing internet while VPN is connected. I am adding it below. Thanks Toby!

To be able to use your local connection while the VPN is active, you need to configure the VPN to be used only on it’s network. Otherwise your local connection may not work while the VPN is active. To changethis setting, edit the VPN, go to the IPv4 tab, click Routes, then tick the box labelled ‘Use this connection only for resources on its network’
