Hello there. Many of you who have installed Kubuntu KDE4.x version along with Ubuntu or who are using a standalone installation of Kubuntu may have come across this annoying error “Compositing has been suspended by another application. You can resume using the ‘Alt+Shift+F12’ shortcut” even after installing proprietary graphics drivers . This error can be fixed in three steps (thanks to ubuntuforums).
1. Click the start button ans select System Settings
2. Go to Desktop -> Desktop Effects -> Advanced
3. Tick Disable Functionality Checks and click apply to save change.
Thats it. Enjoy the Kwin Compositing .
nice info..finally i found the way..thx
Pingback: KDE 4.3 and compositing problem
Thank you for this, but it was a bad idea. After cancelling the check, my KDE just got snail-slow. I had to revert the changes, and log out and back in.
In my case one of the problems was sitting in front of the PC. I didn’t run aticonfig –initial after installing the proprietary driver.
Even after I did, things didn’t get better. So what did I do – this applies strictly to ATi graphics cards:
$ sudo apt-get purge fglrx
$ sudo apt-get install fglrx
# logout, select console login
$ sudo aticonfig –initial -f
$ sudo reboot now
After this, after a few tries, I managed to get compositing and in general all features requiring opengl support to work again.
It seems to be essential to:
– not install the lastest ATI drivers from AMD’s site with lucid or maverick
– not run aticonfig while X is running
Can’t be sure of the fix, but this is what I found out after a few days of no opengl.
