A lot of us want to use AWN or Docky panel mode as the main panel and get rid of the top and bottom gnome panels. In Ubuntu 9.10/10.04, the top panel, however, cannot be deleted just like that! Delete the panel option is disabled for the top panel in Lucid Lynx. However, a simple workaround is quite possible. Here it is..
Open gconf-editor . To open the configuration editor press Alt+F2 and type in gconf-editor
Go to apps -> desktop ->session -> required components
And delete gnome-panel from the value of panel. Log out and log back in. That’s it! You now have a desktop with no gnome panels. Do remember , once gnome-panels are gone, you wont have Alt+F2 functionality as well. The best alternative is to have gnome-do installed.
If you want to restore the panels, just fill in gnome-panel in the value section , logout and log back in.
IMP: If you are trying to use AWN or Docky trunk builds , they might crash on heavy use. So, please have gnome-do installed for emergency cases.
I dont have that option. When I do:
Go to apps -> desktop ->session -> required components
there is no desktop under apps
apps -> gnome ->session -> required components
This doesn’t work for me. I can’t delete the key, and emptying the value doesn’t work.
doesn’t work for me either. are you sure you’re using 10.04? im on a 64bit 10.04 version… the path /apps doesn’t have a desktop entry and the /desktop path doesn’t have a session entry… I hate how its all changed in this version…
Nice! This worked for me. However, I found it under:
Desktop -> Gnome -> Session -> required_components_list
