The list of new functionalities being introduced in Ubuntu 10.04 is becoming longer by the day. Lucid Lynx now comes with PPTP vpn support by default. This very good news for users who connect to the internet or connect to their office networks using a PPTP VPN . It becomes very easy for non-technical users who shy away from any installation . All the previous issues while connecting with pptp vpn has been resolved and now the connection is just a cakewalk.
1. Left click on the network manager and select vpn-> configure vpn .
2. Add the credentials of your network.
3. Click on advanced settings, select point-to-point encryption (MPPE) and ‘Allow stateful encryption’.
4. Uncheck the rest of the options and save the settings.
That’s it . You are ready to connect to your vpn.
UPDATE: A very important point made by one of our readers(Toby) about using local connection for browsing internet while VPN is connected. I am adding it below. Thanks Toby!
To be able to use your local connection while the VPN is active, you need to configure the VPN to be used only on it’s network. Otherwise your local connection may not work while the VPN is active. To changethis setting, edit the VPN, go to the IPv4 tab, click Routes, then tick the box labelled ‘Use this connection only for resources on its network’
Hello
I have had many troubles connecting to Windows box form my Ubuntu 10.4 laptop, I followed your instructions however I didn’t have much success, all what i get from /var/log/messages is the following:
pppd[4148]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
pppd[4148]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[4148]: Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/2
pppd[4148]: Connection terminated.
pppd[4148]: Exit.
It wouldn’t even try to authenticate, any ideas??
Mark
Mark, I am not clear as to how are you connecting from ubuntu to windows. Is the windows machine a server ?
I am experiencing almost exactly the same thing.
pppd[4700]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0
pppd[4700]: Using interface ppp0
pppd[4700]: Connect: ppp0 /dev/pts/1
pppd[4700]: Connection terminated.
pppd[4700]: Exit.
This error generally happens because of an error when the server rejects the connection.

Hello my name is Anthon, I really liked your article! Nice work Sayantan
Thanks. I’m glad you liked it
Thanks for this, worked perfect!

In Windows this setting is called ‘Use default gateway on remote network’. Hope that helps!
thanks for the update. that was an important point that i missed out!
What you’ve described is called “split tunneling”. It is convenient but is not without its security risks: http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/2004fixipsectunnel.html

That is for everybody that tried the tips on this post, but did not succeed yet.
I have a lot of problems that were solved only when I avoid to fill NT Domain. It’s odd but my connection (destiny was a Windows 2008 R2 Server Controller) only work after remove NT Domain and use just the user and password.

Hi, I have already configured VPN as you explained. I am using a 3G modem and I connected to internet. But I am sorry, I don’t understand, how do you make a VPN connection? (using those settings). What application must I use? Thank you in advance.rene.
depends on what vpn you want to use. pptp is already installed. if you are using cisco , try using vpnc from synaptic . you can find an article on vpns in my earlier posts.
Thanks Sayantan. I didn’t know how to connect to vpn because it appears grayed on Network Manager menu. I think, that is so because it doesn’t recognized my 3g connection (I am connected using a huawei 3g modem, but it doesn’t appear on Network Manager as an option, just LAN and wireless). I can establish vpn connection by command (vpnclient connect myconfigfile) but it doesn’t take care on what I configured on Network Manager VPN Tab.
